PowerPoint Presentation Tips
Posted on October 7, 2008 at 8:58am, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
Seth Godin has published some good tips on how to keep PowerPoint presentations interesting. His points include:
- Buy your own font to stand out. He recommends buying one from the site Smashing Magazine.
- More ideas, fewer words
- Don’t use bullets, it means that people should take notes and not look at you. Of course at Mimeo.com we suggest printed handouts so that people can be reminded of the presentation after it is over and of course they will not have to take notes.

ASTD 2008 Recap
Posted on June 10, 2008 at 8:54am, written by Keith Miller, Director, Integrated Marketing
Doesn’t seem like an entire year has gone by since I wrote the ASTD 2007 recap post, but here I am reflecting on the 2008 show in San Diego. Probably more so than ever, our team was excited to get in front of the world’s top training and development professionals to showcase our new booth, our latest product Mimeo Marketplace, and to champion our new “think inside the box” philosophy. For those of you who missed the show, thinking inside the box refers to a change in mindset when it...read more

Improving Marketing Performance
Posted on March 17, 2008 at 3:55pm, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
Great presentation by Jason Fried of 37 Signals at the South by Southwest conference on questions every person should ask before starting a project. It never ceases to amaze how many marketing or creative projects are requested without a clear understanding of the problem the project is going to solve and the impact it will have upon completion. I’m going to start every marketing meeting with the list in mind.
Here are the questions:
Why are we doing this?
What problem are we solving?
Is...read more

10 Tips for Successful Event Marketing
Posted on February 11, 2008 at 11:53am, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
Every industry has a conversation that takes place everyday. That conversation or narrative is promoted via the media, blogs and in our conversations with colleagues. One of the goals for marketing is to make sure that the product or solution you are selling always appears to be a viable solution for any issues that are being discussed.
Taking my own advice to heart, I put together an industry event for marketers and advertisers called Advertising Club of New York Meetup sponsored by read more

Good Loyalty vs. Bad
Posted on October 23, 2007 at 8:59am, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
We are in the process of improving the way we communicate with our customers knowing that the reaction of 99.9% of customers is not “please send me more email so my inbox is always full.” Rest assured that we are only going to communicate on the terms specified by our customers. Individuals must opt in and we will make sure that at least to us, each communication is worth the time spent opening, reading and reacting (I like to use the benchmark, would the reader pay $1 for each email we send...read more

Web 2.0 for the Rest of Us
Posted on October 10, 2007 at 8:50am, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
While the technology elite believe we are moving on to Web 3.0 (the intelligent web where we move from searching to finding), most of us are just discovering Web 2.0. Case in point, the learning and development profession and their millions of students/employees.
The other night I was reading Marc Andreessen’s blog about all the whining (ok not everyone, but lots of people) around the end of the new technology bubble, while at the same time thinking back to the recent CLO conference in...read more

Mimeo and Environmentally Friendly Diapers
Posted on October 4, 2007 at 10:57am, written by Keith Miller, Director, Integrated Marketing
When you think Mimeo, I bet you don’t also think environmentally friendly diapers, right? Neither did we, until this post from Jason at gDiapers showed up a few months back. This is a classic example of the power of the blogging community. Jason blogged about a negative experience he had with FedEx Kinkos. Jeff Grill, our VP Marketing, reached out through a comment and offered up Mimeo as an alternative, suggesting he take a free trial. Jason happily accepted, had a great experience,...read more

Notes from the CLO Conference
Posted on October 2, 2007 at 7:51pm, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
I’m in beautiful Tucson Arizona sitting on the balcony of my hotel room reflecting on the many conversations I have had with multiple Chief Learning Officers. The conference is very forward thinking in that the learning and development profession has embraced the need for some blend between structured and unstructured learning. By unstructured learning I am referring to the Web 2.0 driven learning methods that the next generation is accustomed to including wikis, blogs, podcasts and instant...read more

Hyperlocal Marketing
Posted on September 28, 2007 at 10:34am, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
One of the more recent developments in marketing is the move to the hyperlocal web - online information and experiences that are relate to your specific location. The best example of the trend is marketing on mobile devices where the goal is to tie advertising information to the exact location of the phone. For example, if you are on a street corner in Manhattan, your search home page should show a Google Maps street map of the neighborhood, search results of local businesses and a calendar...read more

OMMA Experience at Advertising Week 2007
Posted on September 26, 2007 at 10:50am, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
On Monday I went to the OMMA conference (Online Media and Marketing Conference) as part of Advertising Week 2007 to hear the “conversation” and see if I could pick up some ideas that could be applied to Mimeo.com and our overnight printing business. Here are some of my highlights:
- George Kiavkoff from NBC and the Hulu.com initiative are on the right track in terms of providing the consumer with multiple viewing options without barriers to access. Their dispute with Apple is somewhat...read more

Missed us at the ASTD 2007 show in Atlanta this year? Here’s a video recap. At ASTD 2006, we went with the “Be Clown Free” theme. This year, we decided to mix it up a bit with “Mimeo to the Rescue”. Conference participants were given a lifeguard whistle and a pass for a free t-shirt on day one of the conference. In order to redeem the pass, participants had to come by the Mimeo booth and blow their whistles. We went through over 2,000 t-shirts in the first 4 hours of the show (much to the...read more

As promised, here is a video of this year’s best ASTD celebration. There were several other excited winners, but this customer’s enthusiasm for Mimeo out-shined them all. Yet another reason why we love our customers. And no, this was not staged! We just added the soundtrack. Who doesn’t love a little Queen, You’re My Best Friend?
