Notes from the CLO Conference

I’m in beautiful Tucson Arizona sitting on the balcony of my hotel room reflecting on the many conversations I have had with multiple Chief Learning Officers. The conference is very forward thinking in that the learning and development profession has embraced the need for some blend between structured and unstructured learning. By unstructured learning I am referring to the Web 2.0 driven learning methods that the next generation is accustomed to including wikis, blogs, podcasts and instant messaging. With this new world of learning hopefully comes increased relevance to the learner, but at the same time presents new challenges in measurement, instructional design and execution to the sponsoring corporations.
So where does Mimeo.com and paper fit in to a Web 2.0/Web 3.0 world? The reality is that today’s learners expect that the materials they use reflect the dynamism of the larger context around them. If learning is stimulating online, it needs to be equally stimulating when presented in a paper form. Options such as plain black and white printing, although lower cost, may not be suitable for high levels of comprehension for a generation that thinks in technicolor. While it’s clear that structured learning using paper will always exist, it will be intertwined with newer forms of communication. Over the next several days I’ll post specific pieces of learning that caught my attention.
