Documents 3.0: Innovation in Technology, Documents and Digital Print Technology

Every day we see new technologies and innovative thinking in the way printed materials are managed, produced and distributed in the enterprise. The very nature of documents as static containers of words stood still for 6,000 years, only to be disrupted in the past 5 years by digital print technologies, variable data, e-commerce, cloud print, e-print, virtual print and a raft of innovations that promise to transform the way we communicate.

As noted by Francois Ragnet from Xerox on his “Future of Documents” blog, we are entering the document 3.0 era, where virtualization, cloud computing and the semantic web all promise to transform the way documents are created, archived and distributed.  Cloud computing is already facilitating new opportunities to collaborate, change and locate information used in documents.

While many believe that changes in technology mean a move to digital distribution, I completely disagree. That’s not to say the nature of what can be done with documents will not change.  In 2009 we’ve seen a video player integrated into Entertainment Weekly magazine and just this month SONY announced flexible video displays. In terms of ink on paper, Xerox is working on disappearing ink for disposable documents, so that the paper can be immediately reused. 

In this blog we’ll discuss all of these new Document .3.0 technologies, and the impact these technologies can have in delivering value to Mimeo.com customers. We’ll detail best practices and invite guest bloggers to provide new perspectives.
