Good Loyalty vs. Bad
Posted on October 23, 2007 at 8:59am, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
We are in the process of improving the way we communicate with our customers knowing that the reaction of 99.9% of customers is not “please send me more email so my inbox is always full.” Rest assured that we are only going to communicate on the terms specified by our customers. Individuals must opt in and we will make sure that at least to us, each communication is worth the time spent opening, reading and reacting (I like to use the benchmark, would the reader pay $1 for each email we send...read more

Agile Product Development and Google
Posted on October 22, 2007 at 9:03am, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
It was interesting to read about Google’s approach to agile product development in the Sunday New York Times article titled “The Google Way: Give Engineers Room” by Bharat Mediratta; as told to Julie Bick. One of the struggles in product management is the delicate balance between the need for detailed requirements and the desire of the organization to move quickly. Provide too much definition and the project bogs down in paperwork; provide too little and the development team uses their point...read more

The Impact of Culture on the Company
Posted on October 22, 2007 at 8:47am, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
Part of my job is attending many of the conferences that we sponsor. In addition to the obvious opportunity to meet with prospects and customers, it gives me a rare glimpse into the workings of multiple industries. One theme that struck me at the recent Selling Power (sales and marketing executives) and CLO (Chief Learning Officer) conferences is the amount of discussion on company culture and its role in attracting talent and driving progress.
The ability of culture to be a unique...read more

Web 2.0 for the Rest of Us
Posted on October 10, 2007 at 8:50am, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
While the technology elite believe we are moving on to Web 3.0 (the intelligent web where we move from searching to finding), most of us are just discovering Web 2.0. Case in point, the learning and development profession and their millions of students/employees.
The other night I was reading Marc Andreessen’s blog about all the whining (ok not everyone, but lots of people) around the end of the new technology bubble, while at the same time thinking back to the recent CLO conference in...read more

Buzzword: Adobe Acquires Virtual Ubiquity
Posted on October 4, 2007 at 2:53pm, written by Keith Miller, Director, Integrated Marketing
On October 1st, Adobe formerly announced their plans to acquire Virtual Ubiquity, the makers of the highly praised online word processor Buzzword. The official Adobe press release contained the following statement: “Buzzword, an elegant online word processor, enables individuals to work together to create high quality, page perfect documents.” The choice of the phrase “page perfect documents” is interesting. Here’s why.
The concept of shifting your word processing workspace...read more

Mimeo and Environmentally Friendly Diapers
Posted on October 4, 2007 at 10:57am, written by Keith Miller, Director, Integrated Marketing
When you think Mimeo, I bet you don’t also think environmentally friendly diapers, right? Neither did we, until this post from Jason at gDiapers showed up a few months back. This is a classic example of the power of the blogging community. Jason blogged about a negative experience he had with FedEx Kinkos. Jeff Grill, our VP Marketing, reached out through a comment and offered up Mimeo as an alternative, suggesting he take a free trial. Jason happily accepted, had a great experience,...read more

Is Print Dead?
Posted on October 3, 2007 at 1:08pm, written by Charlie Corr, VP Corporate Strategy
In response to this question, Frank Romano a guru in the field remarked that “print isn’t dead it just looks dead because it doesn’t move.” While the direct question was not addressed at the Chief Learning Officer Fall Symposium held this week in Tucson, Arizona it was implied. There was a great deal of focus on “new learning” styles, “generational” changes and the meaning of Web 2.0 as it related to leaning.
Despite the impact of “new media” most learning occurs from...read more

Is “Print Buyer” Part of Your Job Description?
Posted on October 3, 2007 at 11:50am, written by Product Management
Of course, Mimeo customers buy printing products and services from us. But, virtually all of our users would not identify themselves as “print buyers.” First and foremost they are program and departmental managers in a variety of industries who are responsible for communicating to internal and external audiences in a variety of ways, including print. Mimeo is often a mission critical tool when our users communicate via print, and our job is to ensure that our users’ message is received and read...read more

Picnik.com - Photo Editing Made Easy
Posted on October 3, 2007 at 11:52am, written by Keith Miller, Director, Integrated Marketing
A member of our Project Management team shared Picnik with me a few months back, and I’m still amazed more people aren’t aware of it. It’s hands down the best novice photo editing application out there (on or offline). Its intuitive Flash based interface is incredibly fast, and allows you to easily do all the basics like crop, rotate, remove red eye, and resize photos all in real time. What separates Picnik from other similar applications, however, is the ease with which you can...read more

Notes from the CLO Conference
Posted on October 2, 2007 at 7:51pm, written by Jeff Grill, VP Marketing
I’m in beautiful Tucson Arizona sitting on the balcony of my hotel room reflecting on the many conversations I have had with multiple Chief Learning Officers. The conference is very forward thinking in that the learning and development profession has embraced the need for some blend between structured and unstructured learning. By unstructured learning I am referring to the Web 2.0 driven learning methods that the next generation is accustomed to including wikis, blogs, podcasts and instant...read more
